THE STAR LADY, X-FACTOR AND CHALLENGING
THE FUTURE
Inventions, Improvements and Achievements
are important part of all cultures. Some cultures accept them
more than others and especially where gender is concerned. Todays
show will introduce you to four ladies who took the challenge
and won or competed for national awards for their efforts in
Education and community work.
You will also meet a young man who challenged the system and
won the NASA Aeronautics and Space Administration's Summer High
School Apprenticeship Research Program. How did Neeraj challenge
the system? He was suppose to go to Space Camp as the winner
of the Guam Science Fair. Neeraj, however insisted on going
to the International Science Fair and that helped eventually
to lead him to the NASA Program award. Nagarajan asked that
Dr. Muniappan be recognized as his mentor and helped him develop
his project and apply for the NASA Program. Neeraj is an 11th
grader at JFK High School and plays in the Band as well as working
on science projects and school.
Today's show will also present a lady that took the challenge
to consider inventions, improvements and definitely achievement.
Who is that lady? If you listen to The Deep or read the column
Starry Starry Night you will have heard of Pam Eastlick. If
you read the Mariana Variety Every Wednesday you will also know
that this column is usually written by Pam.
Today, we the deep panel would like to introduce you to Pam
Eastlick and also invite you to listen to Pam tell us a little
about her adventures and achievements. Pam was born in a small
country town Lebanon Missouri. Like Abe Lincoln she went to
a one room school and graduated from high school. After three
semesters of college she got married and moved to Michigan,
California and then followed her husband to Thailand. Dependents
were not encouraged to go with their husbands, but that didn't
stop Pam. She literally rocked Thailand while singing with a
Thai rock band and traveling all over the country. Next she
was off to Vietnam with the same rock band and even met Charlie
under fire and almost lost it in a thunderstorm. She remarried
a computer tech and went back to USA and then to DAN DAN Tracking
station on Guam. This was with NASA. Pam got most of her school
education on Guam her BA and MA and then went on to be the Star
Lady. Want to know how she became the Star Lady?
Tune into our show and find out how she became the star lady.
Broken equipment, seminars and more. Its a wonderful story full
of cats, books computers and as Pam says. It aint over yet.
After meeting the young man receiving the NASA award President
Bush will introduce our next guests. Actually, we hope to have
Ms. Holly Luganob as our guest but as she is meeting the president
either on Saturday or Sunday she might not be on Guam in time
for the show. We extended the invitation to her principal but
she said she was busy with the president. What an honor.
We had three teachers compete for the Presidential Awards for
Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teachers program. Ms.
Luganob was one of 150 teachers to receive the award. We hope
to ask her how she will spend the $10,000.00 dollar award and
what led her to her winning the award. Her school Ordot Chalan
Pago and her principal are very proud of her.
Two other teachers also competed for the award and Yolanda
Pilarca also from Ordot Chalan Pago and Melissa Terlaje from
M.U. Lujan Elementary School. Its great to have Guam represented
in Washington DC and know that we have some of the best teachers
in the US of A right on Guam.
Come join us and hear what they have to say and ask them questions
about their class and education on Guam.
We will also introduce a new program called the X-Factor featuring
youth on Guam. The idea is to introduce exciting and innovative
youth and youth programs during the show. The first program
we are planning is Invention Madness for both K through 12 grade
and college students. It is not a science fair but an invention
and improvement fair.
Companies, professors, business people, hotels, car dealerships
and more will be asked to challenge students to either invent
something new for the hotels, make a better motor or make an
improvement on a cell phone. Develop a train that can go underwater
or make your cell phone water proof. Maybe the airlines will
offer a suggestion or ideas for improvements.
The idea is make an invention or improve a product and put
it all on a web page for all to see. Then bring it to Invention
Madness and share it with our listeners at a live show. Every
other week we hope to high light one or two students and mentors
working on projects for the event. If you are a teacher, a professional
or hobbiest and want to help a student develop an idea or encourage
your students to join in the madness call or fax our discovery
and expedition coordinator, Peter Melyan at 1-671-789=1567 or
Cell 1-671--789-1567 or e-mail <melscot@guam.net> .
Listen to The Deep and learn more about our leading ladies
of Guam and also about our NASA Award winner and the new X-Factor
youth project and how to become one of Guam's youngest inventors.
Become a madness volunteer or sponsor and help Guam improve.
Listen in an ask questions and don't forget the burger king
question of the week to include a dive with MDA.
