EXOTIC DESTINATIONS

Although it’s plain old home for us, Guam is an exotic port of call for thousands of tourists every year. We’re billed as a tropical paradise. And that raises a problem that millions of people wish they had. If you live in Paradise, where do you go on vacation?

Many people swear by Hawaii (from one paradise to another), Bali (ditto) and I personally had a wonderful time in Australia. But tonight, on The Deep, we may get a definitive answer. We’re going to spend some time with Professor Kim Skoog from the University of Guam. He just returned from shepherding a group of people on the trip of a lifetime. They spent 25 days in Mongolia, Tibet and China.

Join us tonight on The Deep as Dr. Skoog tells us all about their adventures and the exotic locations they visited. You’ll learn what’s inside a yurt and hear tales of the base camp at the foot of Mt. Everest, the world’s tallest mountain. Dr. Skoog’s group visited the famous terra cotta warriors and the forbidden palace in Beijing and walked down the top of the Great Wall of China. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Camel rides, cave exploring, and don’t forget that ever-popular vacation activity, shopping! Join us tonight to hear all about travel destinations for those of us who live in Paradise.

AMONG THE SURVIVORS

Our second topic for this evening will be a little more somber. We’ll be talking to Carol Yang who was on her way to work when the terrorist bombers struck London. She’ll tell us about what she observed and about the astounding courage of our British cousins.
On 7 July, at least 37 people died and more than 700 people were injured when three terrorist bombs planted on busses and trains exploded in London. At 8:51 a.m., a bomb on a train near Moorgate and Liverpool Street stations killed seven people. At 8:56 a.m., a blast in a tunnel linking King's Cross and Russell Square stations killed 21 more. About 20 minutes later, seven died as a blast blew a hole in a train coming into Edgeware Road station.
In central London, an explosion ripped through the upper deck of the route 30 bus at 9:47 a.m. near Tavistock Square as it traveled between Marble Arch and Hackney Wick in east London. Police said two died in that explosion.

After the attacks, most cities would have shut down the whole transportation system would have been closed down for several days if not at least a week. But not in London. The people continued to use the subway and buses. Certain stations had to be closed but others continued to operate. Londoners were on the move and not caving in to the terrorists.

On Friday, Carol used the subway to go to work. Representatives of the city government said people should or could stay home but not Londoners. They took the subway and bus and went to work. Carol had to take a different route and it took longer but she was determined as her friends and neighbors.
Carol would like everyone to know that there is a way that Guam and the larger community can help the survivors of this attack. The city of London has started a London Damage Relief Fund. You can go to www.redcross.org.uk/londonrelief The British Red Cross has already donated £50,000 to the Fund. Join us tonight on The Deep for this first-hand account of courage and to learn more about how you can help the victims.

And on a happier note, I would like to introduce my grandson to the world. Brandon Cole Concepcion Mesngon, son of Jackie Concepcion and Mariano T. Mesngon II was born on 8 July 2005. Welcome to Paradise, Brandon!

Whether we’re learning where to go on your summer vacation or talking to people in the heart of the year’s biggest news story, The Deep, hosted by Jim Sullivan with Pam Eastlick and Peter Melyan is the place to be on K-57 tonight at 6:00 p.m. Don’t miss it!
