03/29/06:Going into Space:
Past, Present and Future
We’re all interested
in the space program. Many of us who came of age in its
early days, had high hopes of making a personal visit
to “The Last Frontier”. Unfortunately, that
hasn’t happened. The high cost of boosting anything
into low Earth orbit (LEO), and several spectacular failures
by NASA missions have conspired to keep us ground-bound
common folk firmly in place. What
is the future of space exploration? Nobody knowsMORE>>

03/22/06:Seeing Red
One of the solar system’s
enduring mysteries is the Great Red Spot on Jupiter. It’s
the largest and longest lasting storm in the solar system.
It appeared in the first drawings of Jupiter in the mid-1600’s
and students of Galileo’s drawings and notes think
he may have also seen it in the early 1600’s. It’s
been swirling through Jupiter’s cloud decks for
at least 300 years MORE>>
03/15/06:Jimmy Hall Goes
A'Swimmin' with the Sharks and Seeing Mars
In 2004, sharks
killed seven people worldwide ...and how many sharks did
we kill? Around 50 million. Not much of a contest is it?
And, by the way, just what is the most deadly animal as
far as killing people and causing human deaths? Oh, that’s
easy. The mosquito is directly responsible for killing
at least 2 million people a year. So, which are you more
afraid of, the mosquito or the shark

03/8/06:Moby Dick Revisited
or The Whale's Revenge
Although we
humans are
definitely meat eaters, we also have a soft spot
for the underdog. Sometimes animals ‘get their own’
in the constant struggle between animals and humans. The
cow that escapes from the slaughterhouse truck, the turkey
supposedly destined for the Thanksgiving table at the
White house, the NASA chimps that have grown too old to
serve; they all receive their reprieves. And when wild
animals get the upper hand (or the prize), we invariably
cheer MORE>>
03/01/06:Paying for Your
Sins and A New Approach to Health Care
All of us have been alarmed
by the rising cost of health care. Many people here on
Guam and elsewhere have been forced to the dangerous practice
of discontinuing their medical insurance because they
can no longer afford to make the payments. Not only does
it put these people and their families in grave danger
in case of serious illness or accident, it causes a huge
moral and ethical dilemma MORE>>
