April 25, 2007: Revisiting the VOG
IThere’ve been some interesting rumors floating around lately about our neighbors to the north; specifically about the island of Anatahan. I’ve heard that Anatahan will definitely blow its top in a few weeks and when it does it will totally devastate Guam with 100 foot high waves, flowing lava, lava bombs and ash fall. People say that our government should immediately stop whatever they’re doing and turn all their attention toward preparing for and protecting us from this cataclysmic event. Anatahan, they say, will become another Krakatoa, the most destructive volcanic eruption in modern times. So, what are the facts about this potential catastrophe?MORE>>
I’ve caught some flack lately from several different people because I didn’t feature an eclipse in my newsletters or press releases. This confused me because there have been no eclipses visible from the western Pacific this year. Yet these people insisted that they’d seen what was described as an almost total solar eclipse. So what’s been going on?MORE>>

Everybody loves monsters. All you have to do is look at the popularity of movies like King Kong or Godzilla or even the Harry Potter series to realize that scary monsters touch a very deep point somewhere in the primitive parts of our brains. Monsters are what ‘primal fear’ is all about.
But part of the monster attraction lies in our certain knowledge that these gigantic movie creatures aren’t real. There are no apes 50 feet tall; no lizards that can take out the Golden Gate bridge with one swipe of the tail. Why not? Because by this time, given the rapidly expanding pace of civilization, someone would have noticed. But what about the places man can not easily go? Water covers 70% of our planet and most of it is several miles deep. What monsters lurk in the ocean depths??MORE>>
We’ve had some really interesting stories lately and one that caught my attention last week was the one about the close encounter a Chilean airplane had with something falling from the sky. Several fireballs were seen from the aircraft accompanied by a loud roar. That would certainly take my mind off the movie! Initial reports said that the plane had encountered debris from a Russian rocket; but the time frame was wrong and most experts now think that the plane encountered a rogue meteor over the skies of the southern Pacific. What are your chances of getting hit by a meteor or meeting your demise is some other exotic fashion? Tune in this week to find out The Odds!MORE>>
