transiting extrasolar planets May 30 , 2007: A Different Kind of Second Life

Most of you have probably heard about the website Second Life.  That’s the virtual reality website where you create your own avatar and live a ‘second life’.  But there’s an older meaning to the term.  It’s when you have completed your basic tasks and goals and then get a second chance to try something totally new.  That’s about to happen to one of our robot spacecraft. Tune it this week to see what the future has in store for Deep Impact! MORE>>

Honey Bee May 23 , 2007: Buzz Words

You may have seen some stories in the news lately about the mysterious disappearance of large numbers of honeybees.  And of course, the thought may have crossed your mind “I’m not Winnie-the-Pooh.  Why should I care if there are fewer bugs in the world?” This week, we will explore why the dissappearing honey bees may well threaten the availability of the majority of our food source. Melmac® dinnerware May 16 , 2007: A Trail of Death and A Plea for Help!

There’s been a lot in the news lately about all the pet food recalls.  I was confused because I couldn’t figure out why anyone in their right mind would grind up Melmac®, the kitschy 50’s dinnerware, and put it in pet food, because that’s what Melmac® is; it’s melamine. This week, we will talk about how and why Melamine is in our pets food (and in ours?) and give you the latest update in the potential blackout in "Guams Starry Skies" MORE>>

Centaurus A in X-rays May 9 , 2007: Taking Pictures

We’ve looked at the night sky since we lived in caves and for most of human history; it was pretty much a study in black and white.  Mars and some stars like Betelgeuse and Aldebaran are noticeably red and other stars are definitely blue but still, black and white pretty much described it. Then, in 1610, Galileo looked at the sky for the first time with a telescope and discovered that not only was Mars red, Saturn was a deep golden yellow and Jupiter had colored stripes.  Perhaps the sky wasn’t just black and white after all. This week, we will take a look at some of the amazing things that we CAN'T see! MORE>>

Crown of Thorns Starfish May 1 , 2007: Light, Predators and Mud

There were several interesting science stories in the news this week and I thought I’d feature them all.  They all relate to the environment, some in good ways and some in bad. Our first topic will be about some innovative scientists that have developed a new lighting device with “100 percent internal quantum efficiency”.  (you'll just have to read the full article to find out exactly what that means!). From this promising story about the environment, we will turn to the tale of a menacing predator.  And the week will wrap up with an update on that mud volcano in Indonesia. MORE>>
