June 27, 2007: A Holey Problem and Swatting a Killer
Driving on Guam more closely resembles a trip through a pinball machine (remember those?) than a trip down a motor speedway. You first swerve this way to avoid that big hole along the shoulder and then into the other lane because there’s a gigantic pavement hump and hole in yours. No one seems to want to (or be able to) come up woth a way to make the asphalt last longer and be more reliable...until now. This week we will take a look at one young lady and her computer program that is destined to change the world of asphalt as we know it! Also up this week, we will be talking about ways to protect yourself from a killer that chalked up more kills last year than all our wars combined! MORE>>
June 20, 2007: Exploring the Depths and Scaling the Heights
A couple of months ago, I told you about the amazing robot, DEPTHX. This little guy looks sort of like a partially peeled orange and it’s quite the explorer. It’s designed to explore underwater and it doesn’t really need help from the humans who built it. Last month, DEPTHX was taken to El Zacaton, the deepest cenote in the world. No one knew exactly how deep El Zacaton was, but the people who run the robot knew that DEPTHX could tell them. This week, we will take a look at what DEPTHX learned about El Zacaton and what future exploration this project is ultimately preparing DEPTHX to undertake! MORE>>
June 13 , 2007: A Little of This, A Little of That
In this week’s article, I thought I’d bring you a compendium of science stories that I’ve been accumulating. No ‘in depth’ reporting here, just some fun (and not so fun) facts and interesting news you may not have heard. We will warm up with JITTERING YOUR WAY TO GOOD HEALTH, then on to WAVES IN THE WORLD OCEAN, LOOSING A SATTELITE AND GAINING KNOWLEDGE and we will wind down with the burning question; WHERE HAVE ALL THE FARMERS GONE? MORE>>
One of the things I consistently observe when I talk to a group of school kids is that they have no concept of just how BIG space is. Our experience with cars and airplanes has given us the notion the Moon is just around the corner, the planets are a hop, skip and a jump away and (thanks to Star Wars and Star Trek) other stars are reachable in days at the most. This week, we will delve into the true distance to the stars, in terms EVERYONE understands! MORE>>
